An active athlete in my youth including years of high level competitive gymnastics until knee surgery at 18 ended my path on that journey (although I coached for a coiuple more years during college). In my subsequent adult years I found myself being relatively inactive. Over time I began picking up activities, first Mountain Biking/Racing and road bike rally riding, then competitive volleyball, running, and other things I'd "left behind" in my adult years. My wife Tonia and I became active in scouts in support of our kid, and through that, met a couple of folks finding their own fitness journeys, Tonya Nelson and Karen Herring, and participated in some of their early fitness training endeavors. That led to Karen eventually founding The Colony Crossfit, where Tonia and I became clients 1 and 2. WIth this and other training, I've completed many triathlons, Spartan, Deka, Hyrox, and other challenging fitness events. My wife and I competed at the Deka World Championships in 2024 in spite of a shoulder injury the last half of that year holding me back substantially (I put off surgery till immediately after WC).
After finding how much I loved the "unpredictable" nature of the workouts in CrossFit, something different every day, I began looking forward to improving myself in ways I hadn't since I was a teenager. This led to me eventually assisting coaching with Karen and then earning my L1, as well as assisting my wife in her USA Weightlifting certified coach program. When life changes for Karen led to her stepping away, my wife and I decided we would continue our "CrossFit family" at TCCF, as it has changed both our lives in many ways.
I've always wanted to challenge myself to "be my best" at whatever I put myself to, CrossFit being no different. However CrossFit has become a "gateway" to other competitive activities, that I wish I'd had 30 years sooner to be honest, however as a 50-something competitor, I still enjoy the challenges of competition, with myself to do better as well as whatever leaderboard is around.
